Howard John Nelson

Memorial service for Howard Nelson, age 86, of Milaca, will be held on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Milaca with Rev. Tim Bauer officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Music will be provided by Cheryl Bailey and Sophie Bauer. Military honors will be provided by Hansen-Hayes American Legion Post #178 & Siemers-Hakes VFW Post #10794. Memorials are preferred to the Milaca Scholarship Fund. Arr. Peterson-Johnson Funeral Home of Milaca. Howard John Nelson was born February 6, 1925 to Fred and Vera (Gilbertson) Nelson in Osseo, WI. He graduated from Lincoln Hill High School in Osseo, WI. Howard served as an Army medic and ambulance driver from 1943 – 1946 during WWII. After his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul. He was united in marriage to Jane McCune on June 17, 1949 at the Congregational Church in Osseo, WI. Howard taught economics, social studies and psychology at the Milaca Public Schools for 36 years. Howard was a member of the Hansen-Hayes American Legion and Siemers-Hakes VFW in Milaca and the Trinity Lutheran Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, wood carver and wood worker. Howard died on Wednesday, December 14, 2001 at his home in Milaca. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jane; daughters, Nancy Greenfield of Denver, CO and Mary (Gilford) Sundeen of Brooklyn Center, MN; grandchildren, Benjamin Sundeen, Blake Sundeen, Britta (Rick) Walstrom, Jennifer (John) Ertelt and Heather (Buster) Arbaney; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Olivia, Isabel, Annalise and Cameron; brother, Jerry (Mary Jane) Nelson of Clitherall, MN; also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Phillip Greenfield; brothers, Robert (Grace), Richard (Winnie) and William (Deloris) and sisters, Hope (Vern) Dewitz and Lucy May (Norman) Hoyme.
