Shirley Ann Santema

Shirley Ann (Johnson) Santema was born on January 24, 1932 to Carl and Anna (Ingman) Johnson near Milaca, MN. She lived in Minneapolis as a child. She moved back to Milaca where she lived with 10 siblings. Shirley married Harris Glen Santema on January 7, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church of Milaca, MN. They settled on a farm 1.5 miles West of Pease where they farmed 120 acres and milked cows. She became a housewife, Mother and a master of everything. Shirley enjoyed bowling, reading, watching television and spending time with family and friends. Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, sister in law, aunt, cousin and friend. She was a confirmed member of Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of Pease Christian Reformed Church in Pease, MN. Shirley, age 82 went to be with the Lord August 26, 2014 at 12:40 AM. at the Elim Home and Rehab after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by children, Holly Santema of Marble, Jody (Gerald) Alderink of Milaca, Kevin (Kristi) Santema of Princeton, grandchildren, Amelia Homstad, Mitchell (Abby) Santema, MacKenzie Santema, Sophie Patten, Grace Santema, Rick Patten, Cassie Jo Patten, and 1 great granddaughter Lillian Grace, siblings Robert (Janet) Johnson of Milaca, Curt (Dana) Johnson of Danbury, WI, Dean (John) Fransen of Milaca, Joan (Ted) VanGrinsven of St. Cloud, Joyce (Ed) Bouma of Milaca, and Paul (Pat) Johnson of Osakis. Also by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harris, son in law Greg Homstad, 2 sisters Evelyn and Lois, 2 brothers Bill and Jerome. Shirley requested in lieu of flowers all memorials be given in honor of Shirley Santema to Emanuel Lutheran Church PO Box 8 Bock, MN 56313. In memo write Building Fund. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Christian Reformed Church of Pease with Rev. Mike Ten Haken. Interment will be at the Pease Cemetery. Casketbearers are Shirley’s nephews, Tim Johnson, Mark Van Grinsven, Greg Johnson, Michael Johnson, John Fransen Jr., and Jim Santema. Honorary Casketbearers are Shirley’s grandchildren and great granddaughter, Mitchell, Abby, Lilly, MacKenzie, Sophie, Grace, Rick, Cassie Jo, and Amelia. Visitation 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Pease church.
