Memorial services for Farrell Maurer, age 84, of Milaca, will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 11 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Milaca with Pastor Tim Schaekel officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 AM at the church on Saturday. Private burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Milaca at a later date.
Farrell Henry Maurer was born August 14, 1930 to Carl and Olga (Reum) Maurer near Wabek, North Dakota. He moved to South Haven, Minnesota as a young boy and attended school there. He moved with his parents to rural Milaca in 1949, where they purchased a farm in the Riverside community.
On June 6, 1953, he was united in marriage to Virginia Rose Lemmon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ogilvie, Minnesota. They became the parents for four children and raised them on the farm. Besides farming and milking cows, Farrell worked as a truck driver, hauling milk to the creamery in Milaca and later as a butter maker in the creamery. He also drove bulk milk truck for several years before he began farming full time along with doing odd jobs where needed.
Farrell was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Milaca, where he served in various positions over the years. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang in the church choir.
On March 18, 1993, Farrell suffered a stroke, which affected his right side and his speech ability. Farrell and Virginia moved to Milaca in 1994. He entered the Milaca Elim Care and Rehab facility in October 2004, where he resided until his passing on Saturday, January 17, 2015.
Farrell is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, Nancy (Craige) Roeschlein of Onamia, Michael (Laurie) of Milaca, Mark of Minneapolis and Debra (Mark) Schmolke of Garrison; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Kennedy and two nieces of Valley City, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Olga; an infant sister; his mother and father-in-law, Harold and Anna Lemmon and by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
