Melvin Oscar Jampsa was born on June 4, 1926 to Oscar and Hilda (PiHlaja) Jampsa in Wolf Lake, MN. As a young man he served in the United States Navy. Melvin was united in marriage to Mildred Shephard on August 19, 1947 in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in Brooklyn Center, MN. Melvin worked as a machinist for over 24 years at Northern Pump, later named FMC, presently named United Defense. In the summer of 1980 they moved to Edgewater, Florida, while spending the summers at Fisherman's Wharf on Mille Lacs Lake. While at Mille Lacs, he enjoyed fishing and attended the Malmo Free Church. His wife preceded him in death on April 27, 2005. Melvin died on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at his summer home north of Isle, MN at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 15 days.
He is survived by daughter, Mary Hoglund of Savage, MN; 4 grandchildren, James Kaun and wife Cory, Eric, Aaron, and Alan Jampsa; several great-grandchildren; half brother, Lenny Isaacson of Detroit Lakes, MN, and sister Faye McRight of Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday, August 24, 2009 at the Malmo Free Church in Malmo, MN. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the Malmo Free Church on Monday. Interment will be 3:50 PM on Monday at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Crystal, MN.
