Violet Mae Solberg was born May 22, 1911 at the family home in Minneapolis to Charles and Eva (Larson) Solberg. She attended North High School in Minneapolis. She was confirmed at the Gethsemane Evangelical Mission Church. During her working years she was employed at F.W. Woolworth’s Dime Store, Standard Clothing Co., Industrial Electric and Fingerhut in Princeton. She met her husband through cousins that were already married into the Samson family. On June 2, 1945, Violet and Theodore Samson were married at the Fourth Baptist Church in Minneapolis. One daughter was born to this union. Violet and Ted resided on the Samson family homestead, engaged in farming until Ted passed away in 1964 after only 19 years of marriage. Violet continued to live on the farm until 2001 when she became a resident at the Princeton Elim Home and later transferring to Milaca Elim Home. Violet transferred her membership from the Fourth Baptist Church to the First Baptist Church of Milaca on November 2, 1947, the same day her daughter was dedicated.
Violet enjoyed reading, sewing and playing the piano. She laid most of the ground work for the family tree, a project she took great pride in. She was the last family member in her generation and has outlived all of her relatives. She passed away peacefully in her sleep April 30, 2010 at the Milaca Elim Home at the age of 98 years, 11 months and 8 days.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen and husband Richard Hoeck; grandsons, Brian Hoeck and Matthew Hoeck and fiancé Tiffany Mitts all of Milaca; Richard’s daughters, DeAnn Morneau of Owatonna and Sandy (Jason) Yerke of Hutchinson and their children; also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted in 1964; her parents; four sisters, Dorothy Robinson, Eleanor Martha Mowers; infants, Mamie and Ethel Solberg; adopted brother, PFC Raymond Solberg, MIA from the Korean War; five nieces; three nephews and Richard’s daughter, Roselyn Murray in 2008.
