Roscoe Samuel Strawn

Funeral services for Roscoe S. Strawn, age 82, of Milaca, were held Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 2:oo p.m. at the Milaca Evangelical Free Church with Rev. Dan Clausen officiating. Providing music for the service was Donna Pearson. Pallbearers were Dustin Christensen, Joseph Strawn, Adam Strawn, Joshua Strawn, Dustin Strawn, Dylan Ross Strawn, Alexander Breyette, David Ross Breyette, and Benjamin Breyette. Honorary pallbearers were Jennifer Markfort, Brandy Barnes, Rebecca Armstrong, Jessica Roche, Kellie Halverson, Alexandria Strawn, Elyssa Strawn, Abigale Strawn, Lindsy Strawn, Claire Strawn, Faith Strawn, and Baby Strawn. Interment took place in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Milaca with military honors provided by Hansen-Hayes American Legion Post #178 and Siemers-Hakes VFW Post #10794. Roscoe Samuel Strawn was born June 7, 1928 to Roscoe Hervey and Bessie (Aeling) Strawn in Heron Lake, MN. He graduated from Holloway High School in 1947. Roscoe served in Korea during the Korean War from February 1951to March 1954 in the 8th Army as a combat engineer. He earned many citations during his service and was also given the Korean War Service Medal on the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War in 2000, for noble contributions to the efforts to safeguard the Republic of Korea. After the war, he served as a drill sergeant at Fort Leonardwood, MO until his discharge. He was united in marriage to Joyce Valley in Missouri on March 4, 1954; she passed away August 6, 1971. He married Rosella (Sandahl) Breyette at Grand Lake, near Rockville, MN on August 12, 1975. They celebrated 35 years of marriage the day before he passed away. Roscoe worked as a welder at Thermo King in Bloomington and at Anderson International in Mora and Ogilvie. He also worked as a custodian at the Milaca Area Hospital and as the custodian/head engineer at the Milaca Elementary School. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, NRA and North American Hunting Club. He enjoyed playing the musical saw, guitar and singing at churches and music jams. Roscoe was a wonderful story teller and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He died on Friday, August 13, 2010 at Milaca Elim Home. He is survived by his wife, Rose; children, Cheryl (Dennis) Spurgeon of Rosebud, MO, Patricia (Lindsey) Talkington of Choteau, MT, Chuck (Mona) Strawn of St. Paul, MN, Dave (Carolyn) Strawn of Des Moines, IA, Richard (Carolee) Strawn of Osprey, FL, Teresa (Dan) Oviatt of Aberdeen, SD, David (Melissa) Breyette of Algonquin, IL, and Jason Ross (Sarah) Strawn of Princeton; 21 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; also by many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles and his first wife, Joyce.
