Albert William Manthie was born March 12, 1931 to William and Louise (Schaefer) in Aitkin, MN.  When he and his siblings were young, they moved to a farm north of Ogilvie.  Al attended District 41 Country school in Mudgett Township and later Ogilvie High School.  In 1952 Al was drafted into the Army and was in the Korean War. Al was a member the C Company 194th Tank Battalion.  Al married Grace (Jacobson) on October 16, 1954.  They made their home on a farm Northeast of Milaca.

After returning from the Korean War, Al worked at the Arsenal in Anoka and also did some farming.  Al started butchering animals for people and opened a butcher shop.  He was a well-known butcher and meat processor in the area, and passed those skills on to his family.

Al was passionate about many things, he loved gardening, canning, fishing, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.  Al and Grace always had the coffee pot on, their house was a place for people to come and visit. When Al’s health started declining, he took up embroidery to keep busy.  Many people received gifts of pillowcases, dishtowels and quilts made with his embroidery.

Al is survived by his sons, Gary (Karen) of Milaca, Curt of Milaca, Vern (Laurie) of Boise, Idaho, Scott (Wendy) of Mora, and Darwin (Jeannie) of Foreston; grandchildren, Jennifer, Janita, Jerrik, Julena, Chris, Mike, Jessi, Kari, Kasaundra, JoAnna, Luke, Melissa, Michelle, Cole, John, Tim; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and also by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
