Arlene Marie Carroll was born January 24, 1932 to Joseph A. and Sophie (Deppa) Novak and they farmed near Gilman, MN. Her brother, Patrick “Pat” was born in 1935 and both children attended Catholic school in Gilman. Her mother, Sophie, passed away in 1940 and two years later, Arlene’s father married Rose Mary Capser. After completing school, Arlene worked as a nanny for a brief time and then worked as a cook and waitress at a cafe in Foley. During this time her brother, Richard “Dick”, was born. Arlene met Henry “Hank” Carroll, who worked at Gilyard’s Ford Motor Company in Foley. They were married on January 30, 1951 in Minneapolis, MN. They made their home in the Twin Cities and later moved back to Foley where their first child, Sharon, was born in 1952. They later moved to a farm near Ogilvie for a few years and then moved into town. Hank worked as an auto mechanic in Mora and Arlene worked at Fingerhut in St. Cloud. In 1962, they moved to Bock and purchased the Pure Oil Service Station. Their second child, Rhonda, was born in 1963. In 1965, the family moved just north of Bock, where they remained for many years. Hank sold his business shortly after moving and started working as a bindery mechanic at Fingerhut in Mora. Arlene became a stay-at-home mom in the 1970s. In 1981, a fire destroyed their home and they rebuilt on the same site. Arlene and Hank enjoyed many Saturday evenings dancing and socializing at Ann Lake, Fish Lake and Spectacle Lake pavilions. Arlene also enjoyed family outings, many Minnesota vacations and a few North Dakota and Montana excursions visiting relatives as well. She loved gardening, fishing, picnics and being with family. Hank passed away in 1987 and her daughter, Rhonda, who lived with her passed away in 2013. Arlene then sold her home and moved to Mora with her daughter, Sharon and husband Mike. In February 2015, she moved to Heritage Place Apartments in Foley. Due to failing health, she transferred to Nursing Care Center at Heritage Place in October 2017. Arlene passed away on March 2, 2018 at Heritage Place Nursing Care in Foley.
She is survived by daughter, Sharon (Mike) Roeschlein of Mora; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Novak of White Sulphur Springs, MT; also by many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hank; daughter, Rhonda and brothers, Patrick “Pat” and Richard “Dick”.
