He was born October 2, 1951, in Montevideo, the son of Ronald and Mayme (Heath) Van Sickle. He grew up in Montevideo and North Saint Paul. He married Doris Johnson of Montevideo on August 28, 1968. Their marriage resulted in two daughters, Dawn Van Sickle and Shelly Reiten. He remarried on October 5, 1985 to Kay Ocken of Richfield. They moved to Milaca in 1994, where Gary started his own trucking business, Van Sickle Trucking.
He loved spending time with his family and friends and was loved by all who knew him. He had many hobbies and interests including his pugs, racing cars, driving semis, raising honeybees, and working in his shop on his many “projects”. He loved the great outdoors and spent a lot of time fishing, hunting, and motorcycle riding. He enjoyed restoring classic cars and going on drives. He was also known for putting on spectacular firework shows.
He is survived by his wife, Kay; father, Ronald Van Sickle; daughters, Dawn Van Sickle and husband, Glenn Gentilin of New York and Shelly and Trevor Reiten of Hutchinson; step-children Shannon Ocken of Park Rapids and Shawn and Erika Ocken of Lakeville; sister, Sharlet and Jeff Huston of Blue Earth; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mayme Botten and his beloved pugs; Lil’ Munchkin Booty, Boo Bear and Scooter.
