Manfred ‘Swede’ William Carlson, age 96, of Milaca, MN, passed away at the Milaca Elim Home on June 13, 2019. A celebration of Manfred's life will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Milaca with Pastor Tim Bauer officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Borgholm Cemetery near Bock. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in Milaca.
Manfred was born March 5, 1923 John W.and Effie Carlson in Bock, Minnesota. Manfred grew up in Bock and graduated from Milaca High School in 1941. He attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter for two years and then spent three years in the US Army Medical Corp. When World War II ended he was in Manila, The Philippines.
After his military service and over-seas duty in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Manfred returned to Gustavus and graduated in 1948. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota. He began his teaching career in Harvey, ND then settled in Kiester, MN where he met Delores Swenson.
Manfred and Delores married July 9, 1960 in The Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa.
Manfred lived in Kiester for 52 years where he taught school and raised a family. He also enjoyed his hobbies of gardening, reading (non-fiction), stamp collecting and fine woodworking.
He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester where he taught Sunday school and summer Bible School. Manfred and Delores moved to Milaca’s Country Meadows, joined Trinity Lutheran Church, and enjoyed fellowship with friends and family playing cards and board games.
He is survived by his daughter, Tammy (Jeff) Cotten of Susank KS; sons, Meade (Kelly) Carlson of Centreville, VA and Brent (Chris) Carlson of Lino Lakes, MN and grandson, Kristofer Carlson of Anchorage, AK.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores and brother, Waldo Carlson.
