Sam De Groat, age 67, of Ogilvie, formerly of Redwood Falls, passed away July 4, 2021. Private services will be held at a later date.
Samuel Albert De Groat was born July 3, 1954 to Norman and Alice (Von Mosch) De Groat in Redwood Falls, MN. He grew up in Redwood Falls and graduated from high school there. After graduation Sam served in the US Army and made it his career, serving for twenty years and earning the rank of Master Sergeant. Sam was in several differing countries and states. Some locations unknown. He was very well versed on the locations he served in and knew all the points of interest in the places he served. He talked about his time in Germany a lot and really enjoyed his time there. He also talked a lot about his time in New York. Sam retired from the military in 1992. He was united in marriage to Irene Wedl on May 19, 2010 in Mora.
Sam loved to make things. He made jewelry and worked with his grand nieces and nephews making treasure boxes. He liked to work with and spend time with them. He especially enjoyed watching soccer matches on TV. He was less active after his cancer diagnosis in 2007. He enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Florida. He also enjoyed trips to Redwood Falls to spent time at the pool with the kids. In 2019, his cancer came back and many of his retirement plans were put by the wayside. He was lovingly cared for by his wife and close family. He will truly by missed.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; children, Justin De Groat and Jason De Groat; brothers, Paul and David; also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Nancy and Norma.
