Sylvia (Hanenburg) Ruis was born on August 17, 1926 to William and Kathryn (Bouma) Hanenburg near Pease, MN. She graduated from Pease Christian School and then Milaca High School in 1944. On March 8, 1946, she was united in marriage to John Ruis. They were blessed with 4 children; Kathy, Alan, Bill and Tom. John and Sylvia farmed together near Milaca for about 57 years and in 2003 retired to Milaca. Some time after John passed, she moved to Country Meadows and in 2022 to Elim Nursing Home. She was a life long member of the Christian Reformed Church in Pease where she was involved in various societies and served as an organist for 50 plus years. Sylvia was very active in the dairy farm operation and all aspects of being a homemaker. She gave piano and organ lessons, was an avid seamstress and quilter, enjoyed playing cards, and visiting with friends. Sylvia passed away on July 17, 2023 at the age of 96 years and 11 months at Milaca Elim Home while under hospice care.

She will be dearly missed by her children: Kathy (Paul) Moos of Rock Valley, Iowa, Bill (Pam) Ruis of Princeton, Tom (Dianne) Ruis of Crosslake, and daughter-in-law Marla Ruis of Milaca, 11 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, brother Ed (Dorothy) Hanenburg, sister Dort (Doug) Brink and sister-in-law Lois Hanenburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Kathryn, her husband John, son Alan, grandson Steve Moos, great-granddaughter Riley Ash, her siblings and their spouses Jerome and Shirley Hanenburg, Betty and Melvin Droogsma, Harlin and twin brother Marlin Hanenburg, and half-brother Enno Bouma.

Funeral service will be held Monday, July 24, 2023 at 11 AM at the Christian Reformed Church in Pease. Burial will follow at Pease Cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
