Wesley Alvin Berghuis passed away peacefully on March 20, 2024, at BeeHive Homes of Elk River.
Born July 13, 1941, to Neal and Abby Berghuis in rural Milaca, Minnesota, Wes' life revolved around family, faith, and the land. He attended country school through the 8th grade and found joy in the outdoors, particularly on his farm. There, he nurtured his passions for gardening, raising sheep, and spending cherished moments with loved ones. Wes's skilled hands and love for woodworking brought to life treasured family heirlooms – cedar chests, cradles, and highchairs – that will be cherished for generations.
Wes's working life was a testament to his dedication and work ethic. For over a decade, he ran his own business delivering milk and ice cream for Cloverleaf. Following that, he transitioned to driving a semi-truck for Kemps until he retired in 2003.
Deeply rooted in his faith, Wes' love for Jesus was evident in his lifelong involvement with his church. He served in Sunday school, AWANA, and various boards and committees. The activities committee and the 4th of July Picnic truly brought out the best in Wes. Here, his love for fun and bringing joy to others truly shined.
Beyond his dedication to family and faith, Wes truly shone as a grandfather. His love and kindness were boundless, creating memories that his grandchildren will forever hold dear. Whether it was endless hunts for new kittens in the barn, swinging in the hayloft, offering sage advice during building projects, or simply being present for a listening ear, Wes made time for his grandchildren. His legacy extends beyond the beautiful woodworking pieces he crafted – it lives on in the hearts of his grandchildren, forever shaped by his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.
In 2008, Wes and Bev moved from their farm to Milaca, creating new memories in a different setting. In 2019, they relocated to Country Meadows, and finally, to BeeHive Homes of Elk River in 2022. Throughout his life, Wes' sweet and gentle spirit, coupled with his ability to find humor in almost any situation, endeared him to those around him. The BeeHive Homes staff especially cherished his positive presence and wonderful smile.
Wes was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and infant son. He will be missed by many family and friends, including his wife Bev, son Mark (Laura) Berghuis, and daughter Brenda (Aaron) Andrews, 4 grandchildren and spouses, and many other extended family and friends.
